Within the framework of the national campaign for the prevention of cervical cancer launched by the Ministry of Health and the Lebanese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Regional University Center (RUC) of USEK – Zahle organized on November 29, 2011 a conference entitled “The Prevention of Cervical Cancer” in the presence of a crowd of faculty, staff and students.
The conference was given by Dr. Marcel Zalaket who underlined that the cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer among women, and it often appears between the age of 45 and 55. Dr. Zalaket pointed out as well the main reasons of this disease, such as being infected with herpes, syphilis or HIV virus, smoking, weakened immune system, unsafe sex, lack of hygiene, recurrent childbearing, etc. He elaborated on the treatment of cervical cancer, underlining that surgeries are the best treatment, in addition to radiation therapy used to shrink tumors or remove cancer cells. At the end of the conference, Dr. Zalaket recommended women to undergo the Pap test (cervical screening test) every 3 to 5 years in order to prevent this type of cancer, stressing that both exercising and diet are considered as proper means of prevention.
