On Friday February 21, 2014, on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, the Faculty of Letters at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) organized a conference entitled “Native Language and Writing”.
Fr. Prof. Karam Rizk, Dean of the Faculty of Letters inaugurated the event saying: “It is normal that human beings love, master and preserve their mother tongue; but it is surprising that human beings deny and ignore their mother tongue without losing a part of their personality and identity…Modern social media poses great challenges on native languages than ever encountered before. It is impossible to face these challenges without referring to the digital world. The equation won’t be right unless the ‘native language’ is equal to the ‘native digital”. He added: “Facing all these changes and other challenges facing our mother language, I urge members of our Faculty, from students, teachers and administrators, to enter the digital world and use its technologies.”
Two sessions followed; the first facilitated by Prof. Tanios Njeim and entitled “Mother Tongue and Creativity”, and the second facilitated by Prof. Joseph Chreim.
