On the occasion of the Martyrs Day, the Student Affairs Office at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik organized on May 6, 2010 a ceremony to commemorate the Martyrs in the presence of the USEK Vice-Presidents Fr. Boulos Neeman and Fr. Georges Hobeika, Fr. Marwan Azar, Secretary General, Fr. Michel Abou Tacca, Director of the Student Affairs Office, besides a number of deans, lecturers, staff and faculty members.
Following the National Anthem and a moment of silence, Mr. Khalil Abboud, Deputy Director of the Student Affairs Office delivered a speech in which he pointed out that this occasion represents a main trait of the Lebanese national unity. The Student’s speech was delivered afterwards by Christine Saliby from the Department of Journalism who underlined that the significance of this day is associated with the struggle of the Lebanese people for freedom and that the martyrs are still alive in the consciousness of every one of us. At the end, Fr. Georges Hobeika, Vice-President for Research, asserted that May 6 represents a turning point in the history of modern Lebanon, pointing out that our martyrs were totally aware that violence means nothing but defeat of the word and decline to the level of inhumanity, and therefore denounced violence, believing rather in the power of the word.
The ceremony ended with national songs performed by students from the USEK Faculty of Music.
