On the occasion of the Martyrs Day, the Student Affairs Office at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik organized on May 6, 2011 a ceremony to commemorate the Martyrs in the presence of Rev. Fr. Hady Mahfouz, USEK President, Rev. Fr. Michel Abou Tacca, Secretary General, Rev. Fr. Boutros Eid, Director of the Student Affairs Office, besides a number of Council members, lecturers, staff and students.
Following the National Anthem and a moment of silence, Mr. Khalil Abboud, Deputy Director of the Student Affairs Office delivered a speech in which he praised the courage of the martyrs whom he described as “torches enlightening the paths darkened by tyranny, and brightening candles on the road to freedom and dignity”.
The Student’s speech was delivered afterwards by Lea Azzi from the Department of Journalism and Communication who underlined that this occasion is a day that summarizes the history of a land and the history of people, describing Lebanon as “the land which was and remains a stronghold of resistance, a land whose soil was mixed with the blood of honorable fighters”.
At the end, Fr. Hady Mahfouz, stressed in his speech the need to sacrifice the most valuable things for the benefit of one’s homeland, pointing out that “every one of us should carefully think about the other, the common good, the society and more importantly, the beloved homeland”, and be able to have a positive outlook on Lebanon in order to contribute to its development and growth.
The ceremony ended with national songs performed by students from the USEK Faculty of Music.
