Between February 24 to March 4, 2013, the Choir of the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik participated during its tour in India, in the International Festival of Syriac Music, Mazmur 2013. The event was organized by the International Faculty of Syriac Studies in Kottayam, Kerala – India. The invitation was issued by Father Jacob Thekeparampil, Head of the Saint Ephrem Ecumenical Research Institute (SEERI).
The visit included a lecture given by Fr. Dr. Youssef Tannous, Dean of the Faculty of Music and Head of the Choir in the University, which tackled the subject of the maronite syriac music, which entailed music scores, recordings and a live performance by the Choir. Numerous bishops, priests, monks and musicians from India attended, and Bishop Antoine Biloni from Lebanon, as well as German, Austrian, Polish, Dutch students and scholars.
The Choir performed two concerts. The first was a solo presented by Reverend Father Abdo Badwi at the BCM School theater, where the Choir sang melodies related to Christmas, the Holy Week, the Resurrection, the Virgin Mary and polyphonic Syriac melodies. The second was a group concert inaugurated by the University Choir, which was praised by the Indian media.
Moreover, the Choir served two Holy Masses in Syriac, the first celebrated by Rev. Fr. Badwi and the second by Rev. Fr. Tannous.
Participants and attendees all commended the academic and artistic level of the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), along with its efforts to preserve, revive and disseminate Syriac music. The crowd was fascinated by the beauty of the Maronite Syriac Hymns and by the masterly performance of the Choir. Dr. Jacobus Groen, Head of the Institute for Liturgy, Christian Art and Hymnology at the University of Graz – Austria, and Dr. Karl-Heinz Kuhlmann from the Evangelical Theological Faculty, Leuven – Belgium, both expressed their intention to invite the USEK Choir to perform in Austria, Germany and others countries.
