Yusef Al Sawda’s nationalist ideas greatly influenced the thought of a whole generation of Lebanese who held the most prominent role in Lebanon’s post-independence political and intellectual life.
He was a militant, poet, politician, diplomat, academic, and intellectual figure who strived to establish Lebanon’s independence and sovereignty, and to spread a spirit of patriotism among the Lebanese. In addition to his interest in Lebanese history, he wrote books and was distinguished by his eloquence and his ability to compose poetry. He also played a major political role from the establishment of Greater Lebanon until his death in 1969. Furthermore, he represented Lebanon as a diplomat in Brazil and Vatican City.
As a token of appreciation and respect for this great compatriot, the Phoenix Center for Lebanese Studies is publishing this book, which includes some of the writings, ideas, poems, and projects of Yusuf Al-Sawda. These have all been taken from his archives at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), which shed light on his patriotic ideas, hopes, and struggle for Lebanon’s independence.
