This book outlines eleven lectures about Saint Maron and the Maronites, about their land, history, spirituality, heritage, hopes and aspirations. They were given by Father Michel Hayek (1928–2005) at the end of the 1970s during Lent, in Saint George Cathedral in Beirut. In these lectures, Father Michel Hayek takes us on a journey that starts from northern Syria with Saint Maron, passing through the monastery of Saint Maron on the Orontes, leading to the Maronite migration towards Mount-Lebanon, a journey that will only end with the dream of the Maronites coming true: the establishment of a pluralistic nation, a nation of freedom, dignity and survival, a nation that guarantees intellectual and religious freedom for all its citizens and ensures safe and decent living. Fr. Hayek concludes his lectures with reflections inspired by the passion of the Christ, the Cross, death and Resurrection, and the One who “was killed because he was a killer!” Fr. Michel Hayek seeks to remind us that the Maronite era is the era of safety and stability despite all difficulties, the era of hope in the future based on faith in God and on the experience of the past.
