Cabaret warns against the control of goods and machines on the performance of human beings due to material temptations and to the detriment of what is authentic and personal, knowing that these two criteria define all that is human. The rites described in the play titled The Trap or the Black Mass give substance to the fears of falling into the trap of the new, globalized civilization. The Bird Island highlights the conflict between “Reason” and “Instinct,” since both do not believe in the wisdom of moderation. “Reason” has left its own body in its quest for eternity, whereas “Instinct” has glossed over perspicacity. The first scene is reminiscent of the fate of the figures in The Trap or the Black Mass as “Death” entangles them in a fishing net.
