In this book, the Phoenix Center for Lebanese Studies at the University of the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) publishes three plays by Abdallah Ghanem, an author who played a prominent role in the literary and poetic movement of the mid-twentieth century in Lebanon and the Arab world. These three plays represent the integral theatrical works of Abdallah Ghanem. Each one of them is unique: Shaytan Al-Burj, or “The Demon of the Tower”, written in classical Arabic, takes place in ancient Romania under the Ottoman occupation. Natijat al-Helem, or “The Result of the Dream”, is integrally written in colloquial zajal poetry and, as such, is a rare piece of work in our theatrical heritage.
The story takes place in Lebanon and is still in manuscript form in the author’s own handwriting. Therefore, its publication is a major asset to our heritage, as it prevents its loss and disappearance. The events of the third play, entitled “Shirin” and also in manuscript form, occur in Iraq. Through careful and meticulous approach, these texts are given the attention they deserve in terms of reading, investigation, and analysis, bearing in mind the conditions related to playwriting back then. We hope that our youth in particular read these plays and other old texts published by the Phoenix Center, in order to keep this literary heritage alive in the memories of present and future generations. This is indeed the ultimate purpose behind the publication of this heritage.
