Elissar Hayek is an associate professor of biology in the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Having joined USEK in 2015 as an adjunct professor in 2015, she specializes in cell and molecular biology, with a particular focus on metabolism, degenerative and inflammatory disorders.
Having earned a PhD with high distinction from Paris Descartes University in 2013, Elissar conducted extensive research on the large-scale analysis of gene expression profiles in particular chondrocytes subjected to mechanical and inflammatory stresses. Her doctoral research explored the potential role of the relaxin gene as a novel target for addressing osteo-articular pathologies.
In response to the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Elissar applied her expertise to identify factors linked to the disease severity and mortality within the Lebanese Population. Her research also explores natural remedies for obesity and related metabolic disorders, advocating for a balanced approach that combines both traditional and contemporary interventions. Through meticulous research and a commitment to exploring alternative therapeutic avenues, she addresses metabolic imbalances, hence promoting overall health and well-being.
A dedicated researcher, Elissar has participated in several international congresses on inflammation and degenerative diseases, contributing to global discussions in her field.
