Joseph Moukarzel is a Professor of History at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Having joined USEK in 2001 as an Associate Professor, he was promoted to full professor in 2021. Throughout his career at USEK, Father Moukarzel has made significant contributions to the University’s academic and cultural landscape.
He has held the position of University Librarian at USEK since 2001, overseeing the library’s development and modernization. In addition to his role as librarian, Father Moukarzel is the Director of the USEK Archeological Museum, where he is responsible for preserving and promoting Lebanon’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Furthermore, he leads the Phoenix Center for Lebanese Studies, a major institution dedicated to documenting and studying the history and manuscripts of Lebanon.
His scholarly interests focus on the preservation of Lebanese manuscripts, historical texts, and cultural history. His research has produced numerous publications on various topics, including Garshuni and Syriac texts, Lebanese monasticism, and Christian-Muslim relations. He is a co-author and editor of several significant works, contributing to both national and international academic discourse.
In addition to his academic roles, Father Moukarzel is actively involved in multiple prestigious heritage organizations, such as the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) as a Foreign Associate Researcher, The Islamic Manuscript Association (TIMA), and the Société d’Études Syriaques.
