Joseph Al Assad is a professor at the School of Engineering. Having joined USEK in 2009 as a full-time faculty member, he has held several key positions and has been the dean of the School of Engineering since 2019.
In parallel with his academic career, Joseph developed a consultancy career as he was the advisor to the Minister of Energy and Water in Lebanon from 2011 to 2019. Since 2011, he has been an advisor of the Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC) for engineering and planning. In 2012, he was appointed Vice Chairman of the World Energy Council, Lebanon Committee. Between 2022 and 2023, he served as the Lead Energy Advisor of the Energy Department at the League of Arab States in Cairo.
Additionally, he worked as an energy advisor for several international organizations such as kfW, GIZ, UN-ESCWA, UN-ECE, WBG, IRENA and EU-funded projects. He has authored or co-authored several renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, policy documents, books, and peer-reviewed journal articles, including: the NEEAP II for Lebanon, the NREAP 2016-2020 for Lebanon, the Renewable Readiness Assessment (RRA) for Lebanon, the RRA for Sudan, the REA for Iraq, the Pan-Arab Hydrogen Strategy, and the potential of Hydrogen production in Lebanon.
