Matthew Gerth is an associate professor in the School of Law and Political Sciences, also serving as a faculty adviser to undergraduates in the International Relations degree program. Prior to joining USEK in January 2022, he was an assistant lecturer in the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics at Queens University Belfast.
Matthew is a political and intelligence historian, whose research focuses on Anglo-American relations, US foreign policy and politics, the Cold War, Atlantic World anti-communism, as well as British and Middle Eastern contemporary history. He has recently published on these fields of study in the following Scopus-indexed and peer-reviewed journals: Australian Journal of Politics and History, History: The Journal of the Historical Association, International Journal of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, Diplomacy & Statecraft, and International History Review.
He is the author of the monograph Anti-Communism in Britain During the Early Cold War: A Very British Witch Hunt published by University of London Press (UK) and University of Chicago Press (US) in 2023. His latest book Trouble in the Suez 1956: Britain’s Debacle in Consideration of Anglo-American Relations has been released by the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik Press earlier in 2024.
In 2022-2023, he was the creator and program director of the Frank Capra film symposiums partially funded by a $50,000 grant awarded by the American Embassy in Beirut. This project marked the first sponsored cooperation between the US State Department and USEK.
Matthew holds an Associate Teaching Fellowship from the British Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) and has been awarded a Royal History Society Fellowship (FRHistS) for original contribution to historical scholarship. In 2021, he was conferred the title of Honorary Commissioned Colonel in the KY State Militia, the most esteemed recognition bestowed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
