On December 3, 2013, the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts of the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) celebrated the 7th commemoration of the death of poet Jawdat Haydar, in collaboration with the Association of Friends of Jawdat Haydar and in the presence of the Dean of the Faculty Dr. Paul Abi Khattar Zgheib, Dr. John Monroe from the Association of friends of Jawdat Haydar, family and friends of the poet as well as a number of poets, writers, teachers and students.
Following the Lebanese national anthem, Mrs. Odile Khoury, Events Officer at the Faculty, gave an overview of the poet's life.
The speech of Dr. John Monroe expounded the optimism of Jawdat Haydar, and hr also spoke on the conflict between science and religion, which was a concern and an interest for the poet.
The Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Applied Arts, Dr. Paul Abi Khattar Zgheib, said: “Jawdat Haydar is known to be the 'Prince of Poets' [...] he was full of confidence and enthusiasm, and aimed for the highest peaks.” He noted that Haydar published ‘Voices’ in 1986, his first collection of poems which made him famous, and which also him the first poet of the Lebanese diaspora and their dreams of an eternal Lebanon.
Following the speeches, an exhibition of photographs taken by students who participated in the competition Jawdat Haydar, was inaugurated. Student who entered the competition came from the Lebanese University, the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, the Lebanese American University and Alba. The competition was divided into two categories: the first included photos that complement the poems of Jawdat Haydar, and the second focused on the design of a commemorative stamp in honor of the poet. The jury met at USEK on October 25 and December 2, 2013 for the distribution of prizes.
The winner of the first prize in the first category was Siraj Din El Asfahani from the Lebanese American University, the second was Youssef Boulos from the Lebanese University and the third was Elie Salameh from the Lebanese University. The winners of the second category were USEK students:Pamela Calionji, Marilyne Bou Habib and Garine Gokdjian.
