From July 12 to 14, 2012
“The Role of Musical Heritage in the Rise of Arabic Music and its Development”

The Faculty of Music at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), in collaboration with the Arab Academy of Music, organized an international colloquium on “The Role of Musical Heritage in the Rise of Scholarly Arabic Music and its Development”.

This event took place from July 12 to 14, 2012, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Music, USEK Main Campus.

RATIONALE
Arabic Art (classical) Music is the music that covers all Arab countries. It has been made throughout many years, from various elements arising from Arabic and foreign origin; elements that the Arabs knew how to combine together and give them an Arabic identity. While Arabs gather around art music, they are distinguished by a unique heritage musical genre, as each country, and even sometimes every region of the same country, has its own folk music. Did these traditional music genres contribute, over time, to the foundation of Arabic music and its development? Are they still able to contribute to the renovation of this music and its development?
The USEK Faculty of Music, always interested in musical, scientific and artistic studies and research, has the honor to invite you to participate in its international colloquium on the role of musical heritage in the foundation of Arabic art music and its development, in order to maintain the Arab identity of this music and its entrenchment in heritage, and to be based upon heritage in any attempt at renovation and development, given the wave of globalization that is invading the world and is aiming to abolish the pluralism of different heritages and their distinctions by imposing one single style on all countries and all cultures.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COLLOQUIUM
Based on its educational, academic and artistic responsibility, and on its targets set since its .establishment, in terms of research, teaching and art, the Faculty of Music seeks to shed light on the various Arabic musical heritages in Arab countries, whether folkloric or religious, and to study their contributions, through time, in the rise of Arabic art music and its development.  The Faculty will find means to collect, analyze and publish them, in order to introduce them to the Arab youth, and make them available to the hands of researchers and musicians.
