What is the “Be-A-Buddy Program”?
Arriving in a new country and a new university can be exciting, but it may also entail some challenges. To help you have a good start at USEK, the IAO launched its Be-A-Buddy Program. You will be paired with a regular USEK student who will provide you with practical information about the University, introduce you to its student life, and help you settle in. Buddies are volunteer students who are individually paired with an international exchange student to help them during their first days, weeks, or months at USEK.

What should I do as a Buddy?
The main responsibilities of a Buddy include:

• Help exchange students adapt smoothly to their new environment.
• Introduce them to other Lebanese friends.
• Help them with the administrative steps.
• Show them around and familiarize them with the University campus.
• Help them look for accommodation.
• Organize leisure activities, such as sightseeing.

Why is it important to find a Buddy as an incoming international student?
Having a Buddy will:

• Help you know more about USEK.
• Answer any potential questions.
• Address your concerns.
• Help you find nearby banks, shops, etc.
• Introduce you to Lebanon.
• Show you tourist areas.
• Accompany you on leisure activities.
• Introduce you to the Lebanese culture.
• Refer you to an expert when needed.
• Just be your friend.

Why is it important to be a Buddy as an USEK student?
The benefits of joining the Be-A-Buddy Program for USEK students include:

• Meeting students from different cultures and backgrounds.
• Improving your language and communication skills.
• Sharing experiences and learning new things.
• Helping other people who are facing the challenges of adapting to a new environment.
• Making new friendships.
• Participating in international activities.
• Earning 75 points towards your USEK Global Engagement Certificate.

For how long can I be a Buddy?
You can be a Buddy for just one semester and more if you so wish.
