USEK at “The Triennale di Milano”

USEK is proud to announce its presence in the XXI International Exhibition of the Triennale di Milano, entitled 21st Century. Design after Design, taking place in 19 outstanding venues across Milan, from April 2 to September 12, 2016.

The prestigious Triennale di Milano was, founded in 1923 with the objective of stimulating the dialogue between industry, arts and society. For over 80 years it has produced important exhibitions in design, art, architecture, fashion, film, and communication as well as a highly-acclaimed International Exhibition every three years.

USEK is the first university from the Middle East to participate in this event, along with universities from all over the world including Russia, Canada, and China.

USEK’s exhibition is located in the Fabbrica del Vapore, an historical old train/tram factory converted into an art complex in the heart of Milano that features the latest works of distinguished artists, students and professionals under 35, and is visited by famous and celebrated designers.

An installation, entitled Beirut Design Spirit, was conceived to exhibit the works of 11 Fine Arts students, including projects in architecture, design and audiovisual.

In architecture, Vanessa Hoeiss, first-prize winner of the prestigious Jaderji award, created a project to save the cultural heritage of Beirut Downtown, and Alexi Zein, winner of the third-prize in the same competition, imagined a revolutionary solution for constructing camps for the Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Emile Semaan designed a new vision for the Beirut Souks.

Award-winning short movies directed by Rima Irani, Assad Khoueiry and Charly Hokayem, students from the Visual and Performing Arts department, are among the exhibited projects.

Other outstanding projects by students from the Graphic Design and Advertising Department, such as a new dancing forms inspired by old typographies designed by Açil Tohmé,an outstanding animation on “Consumerism by Jimmy Nemer, and a new approach in drawing “chairs” by Elie Mouhanna adds an artistic flavor to the space.

The students Maria Caponis and Emmanuelle Hakim from the Department of Interior Architecture designed an exchange center and an artist residency respectively.

This participation further demonstrates the artistic distinction achieved by USEK students, notably from the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts.
