Counseling Services Unit

1. Am I eligible for counseling services?

Counseling services at USEK are available to all current students. We believe in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for everyone in our university community. If you are uncertain about your eligibility or have specific questions, please do not hesitate to reach out, our team is here to help.

2. How to schedule a counseling session?

- Scan our QR Code:
Simply scan the QR code on our office door with your smartphone, and it will lead you to an online form. Our team will get back to you promptly to assist you from there.

- Send us an email:
You can also initiate the scheduling process by sending us an email directly.
Please use the email template on our webpage, and our team will help book your appointment.

Initial Consultation:
An initial consultation may be required. This allows us to better understand your needs and connect you with the most suitable counselor. During this consultation, we will discuss scheduling options.

3. What is the waiting period to get an appointment?

We strive to offer timely appointments. Wait times may vary, but we take urgent needs into consideration. Contact us to discuss your situation, and we will do our best to assist you promptly.

4. How do I know that I need counseling?

If you are experiencing emotional distress, facing challenges, or simply need someone to talk to, counseling can be a valuable resource. Common signs that counseling may be beneficial include persistent sadness, difficulty concentrating, the use of unhealthy coping mechanisms, challenges in relationships, and changes in sleep patterns, among others. If you are uncertain about whether counseling is right for you, do not hesitate to reach out. Our counselors are here to help assess your needs and provide the support you require.

5. How long does counseling take?

The duration of counseling typically ranges between 8 to 12 sessions, although this can vary based on individual needs. Some individuals find benefit in just a few sessions, while others may require additional support. Your counselor will collaborate with you to assess your unique situation and determine the most effective treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. We prioritize providing the support necessary for your well-being, recognizing that each person’s journey is unique.

6. How long is a counseling session?

Typically, counseling sessions last around 40-45 minutes.

7. In case of emergency, do I still have to make an appointment?

For urgent matters or emergencies, please seek immediate assistance. If you need urgent counseling during our regular hours, we will do our best to accommodate you without a prior appointment.

8. Are counseling sessions confidential?

Yes, counseling sessions are confidential. Information shared during sessions is not disclosed to anyone without your explicit consent, except in situations where there is a risk of harm to yourself or others.

9. Can I benefit from counseling sessions in between semesters?

Yes, our counseling services are available during semester breaks. Contact us to schedule an appointment or inquire about our availability during breaks.

10. When and why are referrals needed?

Referrals may be made in cases where specialized or long-term care is needed beyond the scope of our services. This could include severe mental health conditions requiring psychiatric or psychotherapeutic care. Referrals help ensure you receive the most appropriate and comprehensive care for your specific needs.

11. Is there a cost for counseling services?

Our counseling services are provided at no additional cost for current students.

12. Can international students access counseling services?

Yes, international students are encouraged to utilize our counseling services. We are committed to providing culturally sensitive support to meet the unique needs of our diverse student population.

13. Are the counselors specialized in certain areas or demographics?

Our counseling staff includes professionals with expertise in various areas, such as academic stress and relationship issues. We strive to match students with counselors who have relevant experience.

14. How do I prepare for my first counseling session?

It is normal to feel anxious before your first session. You do not need to prepare anything specific, but it might be helpful to reflect on what you want to discuss and any goals you have for counseling.

15. Can I request a specific counselor?

While we cannot guarantee specific counselors due to availability, you may express a preference, and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

16. Do you offer group counseling sessions?

Yes, we offer group counseling sessions on a range of topics. Group therapy can be a valuable complement to individual counseling and provides a supportive community.

17. What resources are available for mental health outside of counseling sessions?

As part of our holistic approach to well-being, we provide information on additional resources, workshops, and self-help materials to support your mental health journey.
Accessibility Services Unit

1. How do I request accommodation for my disability?

You can request accommodations by contacting the Accessibility Services Unit directly (check our Mee the Team section) or by scanning the QR code on the door of the Counseling and Accessibility Office and submitting documentation that outlines your case and recommended accommodations. The Accessibility Services Unit will then work with you directly to determine the appropriate accommodation.

2. What types of accommodations are available?

Accommodation varies based on individual needs, but may include extended testing time, note-taking assistance, accessible formats for materials, and priority registration, among others. Specific accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis.

3. Can I get extra time for exams?

Yes, students with documented disabilities that affect their ability to take exams within standard time limits can request extended durations. The Accessibility Services Unit will evaluate the need and provide the appropriate extensions.

4. How do I renew my accommodation each semester?

At the start of each semester, the Accessibility Services Unit renews the letter of accommodations. Updated documentation may be needed in case of any changes in your needs.

5. Can I benefit from accommodations retroactively?

Accommodations are not applied retroactively. Students should contact the Accessibility Services Unit as early as possible to ensure timely accommodation arrangements.

6. What should I do if I encounter barriers on campus?

Students should report any physical or academic barriers encountered on campus to the Accessibility Services Unit, which will address these issues and ensure equal access to facilities and resources.

7. Are there resources available for tutoring or academic assistance?

The Accessibility Services Unit can provide information about tutoring services, study groups, or academic support programs available on campus. They can also help provide these services if needed.

8. Can I receive accommodations for online/distance learning courses?

Yes, students enrolled in online, or distance learning courses can still request accommodations through the Accessibility Services Unit, which will work with the students and instructors as needed.  

9. What should I do if my approved accommodations are not being implemented in my classes?

You must first communicate directly with their instructors about the approved accommodations. If issues persist, you can contact the Accessibility Services Unit for assistance in resolving the situation.

10. Is there financial assistance available for acquiring necessary assistive technology or resources?

The Accessibility Services Unit can offer information about grants, scholarships, or campus resources that could help students acquire necessary assistive technology or resources. The unit provides guidance on available financial assistance options.

11. Is my disability information confidential?

The information regarding any disability and accommodations is confidential and is shared only with faculty/staff on a need-to-know basis to implement the approved accommodations.

12. Can I benefit from both accessibility and counseling services?

Absolutely, you can benefit from both the Accessibility and Counseling Services units. The Accessibility Services Unit primarily focuses on providing supporting accommodations for students with disabilities or specific needs that affect their academic experience. The Counseling Services Unit typically offers counseling and mental health support for various issues, including stress, anxiety, and depression.
Some students may have a disability that requires academic accommodations and mental health concerns that require counseling. In such cases, it is common for students to have recourse to both the Accessibility and Counseling Services units concurrently to address various aspects of their well-being and academic success. These services complement each other by catering to a student’s needs.
