Coming from a musical family, retired General Dr. Georges Herro received his first piano lessons at an early age under the tutelage of his father, Maestro Mike Herro, and went on to cultivate a musical career as an Officer in the Lebanese Army, as a lecturer in several Lebanese universities and as a pianist, a composer, and an orchestra conductor in the public arena.
In 1979 he enrolled in the Faculty of Music at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) and joined the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music (LNHCM). At USEK he pursued his music studies and took piano lessons with Professor Estephan Emyan. He was awarded his Diploma in Musicology in 1982. At LNHCM, he focused on theoretical studies in harmony and counterpoint under the supervision of its former president, Maestro Toufic Succar, and gained his Conservatory Diploma in 1985. He further developed his musical calling by joining the Lebanese Army as Cadet Officer Musician in 1983, graduating as Lieutenant Musician by 1985.
Throughout this period, he gave private piano lessons and taught music at USEK and the Antonine School in Baabda. He completed his formal education with a PhD in Music from USEK in 2010.
During his extensive and successful music career in the military, he had many titles and was appointed Chief Conductor from 2000 until his retirement in 2012. Under his conduct, the military band performed concerts for major national festival days, holidays, and special occasions in public spaces and in the theatres with prominent Lebanese singers. He also dedicated time to conduct concerts by school choirs in school theatres.
He has regularly guested as a conductor for the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra and the Lebanese Oriental Orchestra. In 2016 he founded and the Zaki Nassif Ensemble for Arabic Music and continues to conduct for them.
He has been awarded trophies of recognition throughout his career, including several from French and Slovak Presidents.
Retired General Dr. Georges Herro still conducts, composes, and plays the piano, continuing to inspire students by sharing his knowledge of music in universities across Lebanon.
